Neighborhood Reinvestment Appropriation

Established by Congress in 1978, Neighborhood Reinvestment (dba NeighborWorks® America) is the original bridge between communities and the public and private sector. NWA accomplishes this through partnership agreements with 238 on-the-ground, nonprofit housing providers across the country: "NeighborWorks®" organizations.

NeighborWorks® organizations operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico; in America's urban, suburban and rural communities. Today, over 75 of the 238 NeighborWorks© organizations serve rural communities.

NeighborWorks® organizations offer a range of housing assistance based on individual community needs, from homeownership counseling and lending products to affordable multifamily properties that are assets to the community.

NeighborWorks® America receives an annual appropriation from Congress as an independent agency: in FY 2010, NWA received $168 million, plus $65 million to administer a foreclosure prevention and mitigation program (NFMC). In FY 2011, NWA received $135 million for "core", $35 million for rehabilitation grants, and $65 million for the NFMC program.

The President has requested $135 million for NWA for FY 2012 and $80 million for NFMC (foreclosure counseling program). See proposed allocations below.

With this additional funding the NeighborWorks® Network is well positioned to create jobs with maximum leverage. For impact data sheets on the number of jobs the NeighborWorks® Network has produced in the last 1-5 years see below:
